The debut album from Mike Murray, "Horizon" showcases the guitarist's abilities as an instrumentalist and composer, and the breadth of experience he has as a musician in many styles. Driven by Murray's fierce guitar playing, the sound is powerful, exciting, and alive with the energy of the players and soul of the compositions. The band had only one show on March 10th 2020, before the world shut down, and despite pivoting to a remote work model were able to produce an album that feels live and triumphant. MIKE MURRAY GROUP

The Mike Murray group is a powerful and virtuosic exploration of improvisation and genre-bending composition. Led by guitarist and composer Mike Murray and featuring Dan Klas on drums, Jack-James Lemaire on Bass and Giovanni Campanelli on keys, the group explores influences of jazz, rock, world music styles and more to create a sound larger than the sum of its parts. Murray’s playing has been described as “...[demonstrating] a virtuosity and expressiveness that is awe-inspiring, bordering on wildly impressive" (Ivan Rod) and represents the bright future of guitar in Toronto’s thriving music scene.

Murray's compositional style reflects his wide background of musical experience with influence from jazz, classical music, rock, progressive styles, and world music genres, as well as showcasing his technical abilities on the instrument. One set can range from through-composed, classical-inspired compositions to free explorations of eastern tonalities or bluesy jams, threaded together by the group's high level of collective improvisation and musical sensibilities.
